Mission

Our Commitment

NEFCOM is responsible to the communities in which we live and work because our customers are also our friends, neighbors, and community partners. This responsibility compels us to provide our customers with the highest quality telecommunications services and reliable internet access at reasonable prices.

The Beginning

Originally called Macclenny Telephone Company, Northeast Florida Telephone Company was founded in the early 1900’s, shortly before the onset of World War I, by George M. Clayton of Macclenny. The event marked the beginning of an era of technology never imagined by residents of the small, rural town of Macclenny.

1900's
The Purchase

The Company was subsequently purchased by Richard J. Davis, and later by Mattie Jean Thompson, after which it was sold to S. D. Roberts in 1948. Mr. Roberts operated the company under the name of Macclenny Telephone Company until April 1955, at which time he incorporated the company as Northeast Florida Telephone Company, Inc. The company had increased its subscribership from 50 members when Mr. Roberts purchased it in 1948 to 200 members at its 1955 incorporation.

1940-1960
Mrs. Walker

Following Mr. Roberts’ death in April 1971, ownership of the Company passed to his widow, Gladys Roberts. Mrs. Walker (her name changed from Roberts by a subsequent marriage) guided the Company in numerous improvements: Update of outside plant facilities; installation of a new digital central office; establishment in July 1996 of a new holding company -NEFCOM- under which Northeast Florida Telephone and other subsidiaries provide local phone service, long distance, Internet, and telephone equipment and sales; etc. Mrs. Walker sold the Company to the current owner, Townes Telecommunications, in December 1998.

1970-1990
Age of Technology

As the turn of the century and millennium brought an explosion of technology, NEFCOM continued to build and expand to keep pace. The development of the internet along with on going phone customers, the goal has always been to grow, but keep the hometown atmosphere that's been here from the start.

2000-2010
The Future

In 2019 we began our Fiber to the Home initiative, since then we have built out our Fiber Network to several new area's in Baker County starting with the areas most underserved. Our mission is to continue to provide quality enhanced products and services to our customers at competitive rates. That goal is being pursued daily by a dedicated staff of managers and employees who believe that, although we may never be the biggest, we will always strive to be one of the best.
