Our history
Early 1900s
George M. Clayton of Macclenny founded the Macclenny Telephone Company shortly before World War I. It brought a technology few people in this small, rural town had ever imagined.
1948 to 1955
The company passed from Richard J. Davis to Mattie Jean Thompson, then to S. D. Roberts in 1948. Mr. Roberts grew it from 50 members to 200 and, in April 1955, incorporated it as Northeast Florida Telephone Company, Inc.
1971 to 1998
After Mr. Roberts died in 1971, his widow Gladys, later Mrs. Walker, led the company. She upgraded the outside plant, installed a new digital central office, and in July 1996 created NEFCOM, the holding company for local phone, long distance, internet, and equipment services.
1998
In December 1998, Mrs. Walker sold the company to Townes Telecommunications, which owns NEFCOM today.
2000s
As the internet changed how everyone lives and works, NEFCOM kept building and expanding, while holding on to the hometown feel that has been here from the start.
2019 to today
In 2019 we began building fiber, starting with the areas of Baker County that needed it most. We've been bringing it to new areas ever since.
